Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File US Individual Income Tax Return is the tax form used for requesting a tax extension to get more time to file a federal income tax return. Upon filing a tax extension, the taxpayer gets until October 15 to file a federal income tax return.

Note: The tax extension normally gives six more months to file a federal income tax return after April 15, but the IRS already postponed the 2021 tax filing deadline to July 15. The deadline to file with a tax extension is still October 15 which grants a three-month extension.
